South Africa’s economy is driven by the manufacturing sector, creating products for export and for
the local markets, and importantly creating jobs for communities.

But a little-known secret is the industry that drives manufacturing: the tool-making trade, the people
who create the tools, the dies and the moulds that are used in every factory across the globe.
In South Africa, this sector is overseen by the Production Technologies Association of South Africa
(PtSA), a partner of the Tshwane Economic Development Agency.

Recognising that this sector is a vital lifeline for production and advanced manufacturing, TEDA
earlier this year signed a memorandum of understanding with the Production Technologies Association
of South Africa.

The two organisations are working together to:

  • develop and implement training programmes relevant to advanced manufacturing and production
    technologies;
  • supportive ecosystem for local businesses in the production technology space, facilitating their
    growth and competitiveness;
  • encourage innovation, research, and the adoption of new technologies within the region’s industrial
    sector; and
  • attract investment into the City of Tshwane, focusing on the production technology sector.
    For anyone interested in finding out more about the job opportunities and training programmes
    offered in this crucial sector, the association is hosting an Open Day on Friday, 1 August 2025.

The event is taking place at the Gauteng Centre of Excellence in the Kuper Leigh Industrial Park in
Hermanstad.

This is a must-attend event for anyone looking for a rewarding career in tool, die, and mould making,
becoming part of an industry that drives innovation and advanced manufacturing.
The Open Day will provide young people with the opportunity to find out more about the industry,
learning about the toolmaking trade, including skills, career pathways, and the demands of the
industry.

On the day, participants will be taken on a tour of the association’s Centre of Excellence where
they will see first-hand world class training in action and get to meet the current apprentices.
The association will also provide information about training and funding opportunities.
Recognising that this sector is a vital lifeline for production and advanced manufacturing.

As TEDA CEO Dr Lardo Stander noted: “We are determined to create a more vibrant and competitive
industrial environment, attracting investment, fostering innovation, and creating much-needed
jobs for our communities.”

His message was echoed by the CEO of Production Technologies Association of South Africa, who
added: “Our association is committed to driving growth and innovation in the manufacturing sector.”
