TES 2025 made a significant impact in advancing the City of Tshwane’s energy transition agenda and positioning the city as a forward-looking urban centre committed to sustainable development. The summit served as a catalytic platform to communicate City’s energy transition initiative influence policy, stimulate dialogue, and foster collaboration across key sectors.
TES 2025 reinforced alignment with national energy policies, IRP 2024, and the City’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP) 2022-26- a strong focus on energy transition, aiming for a more sustainable and resilient energy future. The addresses and discussions contributed to shaping local strategies aimed at achieving a just energy transition, including the integration of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and inclusive economic development.
The Summit brought together a diverse range of stakeholders—including government entities, private sector players, academia, civil society, and international partners—resulting in strengthened networks and the foundation for future project collaborations. The cross-sectoral engagement encouraged joint planning and innovation for local energy solutions.
The summit also benefited from valuable insights shared by the highly esteemed speakers in attendance.
TEDA hosted the second instalment of Tshwane Energy Summit following the successful inaugural event in 2024. The TES 2025 was hosted under the theme “Energy is a catalyst for Economic Development”. The summit was hosted as a flagship event in the city with the objective to continue underpinning the South African economy well into the next century.
The underpinning was not only based on low-cost, high-quality energy sources, supply, infrastructure and use, but also on environmental sustainability and the development of essential skills.
The summit was hosted alongside the U20 Mayoral Assembly convening representatives from local and international organisations, private and public sector, regulators, policy makers, academia, and research institutions to discuss feasible and viable options, both from a financial, technical and governance point of view on the City of Tshwane’s energy transition, with a vision to become energy dependent.
The TES 2025 was a co-located event at the U20 Mayoral Assembly as one of the proposed side events. TEDA saw it as strategic move to align the TES 2025 with the U20 Mayoral event to leverage of the U20 being an important precursor event of the G20 summit. The City of Tshwane and the City of Joburg co-chaired and co-hosted the instalment of U20-2025.
In this U20 -2025 cycle the City of Tshwane hosted the U20 Mayoral Assembly knowns as the Sherpa meeting in June 2025, while the City of Joburg will host the U20 Mayoral Summit in September 2025. The U20 Mayoral Assembly served as a forum for cities to collaborate, innovate, and advocate for their roles as leaders in addressing urban and global challenges. This was attended by Mayors and leaders of Cities across the globe. The U20 Mayoral Assembly was confirmed held on the 12th and 13th while TES was held 13th June 2025 at CSIR in Tshwane.
