Tshwane, South Africa – 08 May 2025: The Tshwane Economic Development Agency (TEDA) will
play a key role in an upcoming U20 webinar addressing critical issues of social inclusion and equity
as South Africa leads the G20.

This pivotal discussion, on 15 May 2025, will drive strategies for equitable growth, poverty eradication,
and empowered communities across the globe.

The U20 webinar will delve into strategies for cities to drive equitable economic growth, eradicate
urban poverty, and build inclusive financial ecosystems that empower women, fuel entrepreneurship,
and promote sustainable growth.

The U20 2025 cycle is under the joint chair of the cities of Johannesburg and Tshwane, with South
Africa holding the G20 2025 Presidency – a historic moment as it marks the first time the G20 is
being held in Africa.

The U20 is a formal G20 engagement group for the seventh consecutive year, highlighting the
G20’s commitment to incorporating the voices of cities and local governments.
The U20 co-chairs are committed to advancing the demands and commitments of previous U20
cycles, particularly in advocating for greater consideration of local governments in national development
and urban strategies.

This includes facilitating access to finance for investment and public service provision and urging
national governments to recognise cities as strategic partners in addressing current challenges,
including social inclusion and equity.
TEDA’s contributions to the U20 webinar underscore its commitment to supporting U20 initiatives
and activities.

TEDA CEO Dr Lardo Stander emphasised the organisation’s strong commitment to supporting
all U20 initiatives and activities. “TEDA is ready and determined to support all U20 initiatives and
activities and will deliver a successful assembly in June,” Dr Stander says.
From 11 – 14 June the City of Tshwane, supported by TEDA, will host a U20 assembly.
Dr Stander highlighted TEDA’s dedication to contributing meaningfully to the U20’s objectives,
particularly in social inclusion and equity, recognising the pivotal role of cities in driving impactful
change.

TEDA recognises the vital role of SMMEs in driving economic growth and job creation within the
City of Tshwane, and aims to foster a conducive environment in which SMMEs can thrive.
This includes facilitating access to funding, providing business development support, and creating
platforms for market access.

TEDA’s support for SMMEs aligns with the U20’s focus on building inclusive financial ecosystems
and promoting entrepreneurship, recognising that empowering these businesses is crucial for
achieving equitable and sustainable growth.

This U20 cycle will progress with a virtual Sherpa meeting in the first half of the year, followed by
an in-person Sherpa meeting and a mayoral summit later in the year, aligning with the G20 meetings
to maximise advocacy impact.

Contributions from the U20 are shared with the G20 Presidency and heads of state, elevating the
role of cities as global economic and political leaders.
