Executive: Investment Promotion & Funding

Karin Liebenberg has worked as an economist for the first 20 years of her career where she gained extensive experience in economic research and development finance. She worked in various government and private sector institutions in both managerial and consulting roles and developed core expertise in economic policy, sector analysis, venture capital funding, project management, incentive administration, as well as investment and export promotion.

As the Executive: Investment Promotion and Funding at the Tshwane Economic Development Agency (TEDA), Karin provides strategic direction in terms of Trade and Investment Promotion. The purpose is to attract investment and promote trade that will result in higher economic growth and employment in the City of Tshwane. Investment targeting, facilitation and aftercare as well as export development and promotion forms a critical part of the function.

One of her main career highlights was to represent the South African Government (Department of Trade and Industry) as the Consul: Economic in Munich Germany for 4 years. The purpose of the economic posting was to promote and facilitate trade relations between Germany and South Africa. She managed and provided strategic leadership to the Economic office in the South African Embassy and Consulate in Germany. Her responsibilities included the promotion of inward Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to South Africa, focusing on the Automotive sector, Renewable Energy, Metal Products, Pharmaceutical, BPO and Film sectors. She was also responsible for the promotion of South African exports and facilitated and assisted various dti funded National Pavilions such as Ambiente, Fruit Logistica, Automechanica, Wire and Tube, GIFA and Anuga

The following are some of her further career highlights:

·         Compiled the South African Competitiveness Monitor, a set of 5 research publications published by WEFA (Wharton Econometric Forecasting Associates)

·        Provided strategic direction in terms of the Industrial Development Corporation’s role in venture capital finance. Received board approval for R200 million commitment to venture capital funds.

·        Managed 3 incentive schemes related to the services and manufacturing sectors, including the BPO and Film incentives. Provided strategic direction to the continuous improvement of the incentives. 


Karin Liebenberg holds a Master degree in Business Leadership (MBL) from the University of South Africa and a B.Com Honours in Economics from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.
